Casters are historically correct for many pieces, as well as aiding in the moveability of heavier furniture. Rolling is preferable over dragging as it is easier on the frame.
Wood casters are most common on pieces after the turn of the century. Rubber wheel casters are appropriate on office chairs, captains chairs, and similar applications. Casters with ball bearings are useful for pieces that are more frequently moved.
